A Night in a Sahara Desert Camp: What to Expect

The desert night is the highlight of most trips. Here is what the camp is really like, from the beds to the bathrooms.

Most hosted trips to the Sahara spend one or two nights in a camp among the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. Here is what to expect.

Arriving

You leave your main luggage in the vehicle and ride camels (or travel by 4×4) to the camp at sunset, with a small bag for the night.

The tents

Standard camps have tents with real beds, blankets and shared toilets and showers. Luxury camps have private bathrooms. The trip page says which one your trip uses.

The evening

  • Mint tea on arrival
  • Dinner together, often tagine or couscous
  • Drums and songs around the fire
  • Stars like you have never seen them

The night and the morning

Nights can be cold, even after a hot day, especially from November to March. Wake up early to climb a dune for sunrise, then breakfast and back to the vehicles.

What to bring

  • A warm layer and socks
  • A head torch
  • A power bank
  • Toothbrush, wipes and medication
  • A scarf against sand and wind
